About the Traditional Chinese Festivals Before Chinese adopted the Western calendar system, they followed a lunar calendar to determine the times for planting, harvesting and festivals. The 12 lunar months are divided into 24 solar divisions. Each division belongs to one of the four seasons and marks the time of heat and cold. The lunar calendar is closely related to the yearly cycle of agricultural work. (abstracted from Holidays and Festivals in Taiwan)
